Elastic OSC is a playful Synth app with multiple Oscillator Modes (Macro OSCs), based on the DSP code of the Mutable Instruments Plaits hardware oscillator module (generously made open-source by MI mastermind Émilie Gillet), one of the most beloved and cloned oscillator modules in the Eurorack modular scene!
Like the original, Elastic OSC comes with a wide variety of possible sounds, from analog-style, FM, and additive sounds to physical modeling, percussive, to even drum sounds.
While Plaits is monophonic, Elastic OSC can also be used in 8-voice polyphonic mode. This means you can use it either as a sophisticated, experimental monophonic sound source, like the original, or as a regular polyphonic keyboard with a wide variety of great sounds. Of course, you can also combine both approaches!

You can play the app using the on-screen keyboard, or via an external keyboard / sequencer — whether it’s a DAW like AUM, Cubasis, Logic (using Elastic OSC as an AUv3 plugin), or external hardware.

Elastic OSC is designed for playability and simplicity – much like the Plaits hardware, which uses just four main knobs to control all essential synth parameters. In Elastic OSC, these four core parameters are mapped to an XY pad, allowing for quick and intuitive sound tweaking, while a second XY pad offers direct control over the built-in effects.
Elastic OSC is essentially a one-screen app with no menu diving. Despite its clean and minimal interface, the sonic possibilities are vast: under the surface lie 24 different oscillator models and full parameter automation – as you know from other Elastic apps.

A versatile Arpeggiator makes it easy to start with simple ideas or can already create entire sonic worlds.

CDM: „Elastic OSC becomes a must on iOS. It’s fun to use as an instrument in your iPad DAW of choice.“

AudioNewsRoom: „If you make music on iOS and you’re even remotely interested in synthesis beyond presets, Elastic OSC is essential.“

SYNTH ANATOMY: „Takes the Mutable Instruments (Plaits) algorithms on a wild trip. A nearly perfect app.“

AMAZONA.DE: „Trotz minimalistischem UI bietet die App beeindruckenden Sound und Flexibilität für iOS-Musikmacher.“

User reviews:
„Interesting, useful, and playful synth. I love the XY pads that hide complexity and invite you to just play around and explore.“
„My new favorite ios synth!“
„I’ve been making music for 30 years, and this is absolutely the best sounding iOS synth I have ever had the privilege to experience. I am blown away, the UI, the automation, and it sounds so bubbly and warm. I have pretty much every iOS synth, and on my momma… this is the best sounding.“

Elastic OSC 1.3 adds long-awaited MPE support to iOS. Unlock expressive control and shape sounds with polyphonic aftertouch andper-note gestures. Map Glide (X), Slide (Y), and Pressure (Z) to synthesis parameters and control them with external MPE controllers or the built-in keyboard (X and Y). As with any MPE instrument, all gestures work polyphonically, meaning each note can control parameters independently — for example different gains or timbres depending on the pressure applied to each key.

MPE support is available as a $3.99 / €3.99 / £3.99 in-app purchase
You can already play and test the included MPE presets that come with this update (by artists like Red Sky Lullaby, Nerk, and others). However, editing MPE mappings is only available after purchasing the feature, allowing you to save them as part of your presets. A Lock button lets you keep your current MPE setup while loading other presets — so you can explore sounds without losing your preferred MPE mapping.

3 MPE MODULATION SOURCES
– Glide (X) also called Pitchbend
– Slide (Y) also called Timbre (CC #74)
– Pressure (Y) also called Aftertouch

8 MPE MODULATION TARGETS
Can be mapped bi-polarly to control:
– Frequency Amount
– Timbre Amount
– Morph Amount
– Harmonics Amount
– Engine Amount
– Filter Amount
– LFO1 Amount
– Gain Amount

Elastic OSCis now also available for Android phones and tablets.
The Android version delivers the same synthesis engine and feature set as the latest iOS version (1.3), including the newly introduced MPE support for expressive polyphonic performance. With over 500 presets from sound designers like Red Sky Lullaby, Nu-Trix, SRVND, Another Machines, ToYaGa, and Nerk, you can dive straight into a huge world of sounds.

To celebrate the release, Elastic OSC for Android will launch at a special introductory price: just $4.99 (US) / €4.99 (EU) / £4.99 (UK) — half the price of the iOS version!

Coming next:
Desktop versions for Windows and Mac (Audio Unit & VST3) are planned for April.

We’re planning to release a stripped-down JUCE project with the integrated original DSP code and a simple GUI on GitHub, as a way of giving back to the open-source community – may take until late 2026.
